It’s Christmas! This time of year has been designated to celebrate the birth of Christ. For some Christians, this reality has been denounced because Christmas is linked to paganism. Although it has been proven that Yeshua HaMashiyach wasn’t born on December 25th and Christmas has ties to paganism, the truth is, He is to be celebrated.

It is important to note that to celebrate is to assemble to honour. In addition to this, a celebration without doubt carries an element of and contains joy. Scripture reveals that the angel told the shepherds spending the night in the fields “…Don’t be afraid, because I am here announcing to you Good News that will bring great joy to all the people. This very day, [whatever day it was], in the town of David, there was born for you a Deliverer who is the Messiah, the LORD“ (Luke 2:10-11 CJB personalization and emphasis added). In Apostle Matthew’s account of Messiah’s birth, we are told that “After they [the Magi – wise men – astrologers] had listened to the king, they went away; and the star which they had seen in the east went in front of them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. Upon entering the house, they saw the child with His mother Miryam; and they prostrated themselves and worshipped Him. Then they opened their bags and presented Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:9-11 CJB personalization and emphasis added). Isn’t it amazing that the shepherds and Magi – wise men – astrologers weren’t present to witness His birth, yet they assembled to honour Him? What’s even more astonishing is the means through which they received the message; the shepherds were made aware by angels and the Magi via astrology {Check Luke 2:8-20; Matthew 2:1-12}. The truth is, it doesn’t matter how and when we get the message of His birth; getting the message and responding to it with gratitude is what matters. Furthermore, Apostle Paul told Corinthians that “…God chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise; God chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the strong; and God chose what the world looks down on as common or regards as nothing in order to bring to nothing what the world considers important “ (1 Corinthians 1:27-28 CJB).

So as you gather together with family and friends this Christmas, commemorate the birth of Yeshua HaMashiyach; don’t allow the food, gifts, decorations nor the sweet fellowship to be a thief of the glory that belongs to Him. In my book, that’s paganism. Like King David, I admonish you to “give [YHVH] the glory due His name; worship [Him] in holy splendour” (Psalm 29:2 CJB personalization and emphasis added).
